The decision to hire an additional 8,000 personnel for the Social Welfare Department (JKM) does not seem to reflect the department’s real needs in the field, said Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh.
The allocation for these appointments, as announced by Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rina Harun was questionable, Yeoh said in a statement today.
“Until now, the total number of JKM staff is 6,000, and the question arises how can there be an increase in contract staff of a total of 8,000 people only for one government agency.
“If Rina is really serious about the restructuring of JKM, then she must first give priority to increase child protection officers and others for the department, which is around 1,500 people,” said the former deputy minister of this ministry under Pakatan Harapan.
There is an urgent need to hire child-protection officers, psychological officers and welfare officers to investigate claims lodged with the department, said Yeoh.
She is referring to the ministry’s plans to hire 8,000 personnel under JKM next year.
Rina said the new staff will be hired on contract as part of the ministry’s restructuring plan as there aren’t enough volunteers for the 32 million population.
However, Yeoh said Rina should not use the hiring for political purposes, adding that JKM should not be turned into a political branch.
“Rina is reminded not to fill the vacancies of the 8,000 contract positions like how she hired the Yayasan Kebajikan Negara volunteers who were paid allowances.
“Until now she has not denied allegations that they were members of Bersatu Srikandi.”
Rina should prove her commitment by tabling of the Social Work Profession Bill and the appointment of more child-protection officers as well as ensuring that they receive adequate training, Yeoh added.
“This is not a question of the appointment of political volunteers, this is a question of the lives of children who are at stake.” – TMI
