Dr Mahathir Mohamad today “dared” Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to keep his promise to call for snap polls, and added sarcastically that this was so more people can die from Covid-19.
The former prime minister in his usual scathing tone slammed the Muhyiddin-led Perikatan Nasional government for forcing state elections in Sabah, leading to a hike in virus cases.
“The top leadership said, if they win in Sabah there will be a general election.
“Keep your word. Hold a general election. Let hundreds of thousands get infected with Covid-19. Let more people die.
“Politics is more important than principle,” Dr Mahathir said in a blog post this morning.
He was referring to Muhyiddin’s remarks during the state polls, that he would consider a snap election if his pact Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) won.
On September 26, GRS, which consists of PN, Barisan Nasional and Parti Bersatu Sabah, defeated Warisan Plus with a slim majority.
However, the victory came at a huge cost. The virus has since spread all over the state, and even landed in the peninsula through returning politicians and Sabahans who had gone back to vote.
Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor and his wife have also tested positive.
“The elections in Sabah should have not happened. Sabah had its elections in 2018. Warisan got the mandate, but the government wanted to win in Sabah by using back-door tactics.
“To prevent this, Warisan had to dissolve the state assembly and call for elections.
“Cash ultimately won, because it is king.”
Hundreds of positive cases have been reported daily in the past week, with a majority coming from Sabah.
Muhyiddin’s PN government currently has a slim two-seat majority in Parliament.
Tomorrow, PKR president Anwar Ibrahim will be meeting the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to prove that he has a strong majority to form a new federal government. – TMI
