Umno should not complain about the Perikatan Nasional-led government’s shortcomings, as it is the party keeping the government afloat, said former federal territories minister Khalid Abdul Samad.

The Shah Alam MP accused Umno of being complicit in a “conspiracy” to keep the government in power.

“Whether they like it or not, Umno is part of this conspiracy. Umno is in a position to bring down this government and bring in a more responsible government.

“They are behaving like the opposition, but they are the ones propping the government up.”

Khalid’s comments were in response to a statement by a fellow panellist at a forum, Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan, who had advocated for more bipartisan support to combat the disillusionment many Malaysians feel towards the government.

Shahril called Khalid cynical, after the Amanah communications director made a number of comments about Umno.

“I would love to work together, but how can it happen when even in a place like this (Khalid) wants to take a potshot?” Shahril said.

“I am cynical because there is a lot to be cynical about,” Khalid fired back, referring to the emergency.

The panel was part of the Malaysia Democracy Forum, organised by the International Strategy Institute. – FMT
