Not cooperating with Mahathir would see charges against Guan Eng dropped.

Lim Kit Siang was threatened over his cooperation with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in the run-up to the 14th General Election.

The DAP adviser was warned at the end of 2016 when he and PPBM chairman Mahathir struck a political alliance that included PKR and Amanah, The Sun reported.

“If you don’t cooperate with Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the charges against Guan Eng will be dropped,” Kit Siang was quoted as saying.

His son Guan Eng, who was then Penang Chief Minister, was later charged with graft for a bungalow purchase.

“For me, it was no go. The charges against Guan Eng wasn’t just selective prosecution but political prosecution,” Kit Siang was quoted as saying.

However, he refused to disclose who made the threat or how it was conveyed to him.

Guan Eng had claimed trial to two corruption charges brought by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on June 30, 2017, consisting allegations of a piece of land from agricultural status to residential, and for allegedly buying a bungalow at RM2.8 million, believed to be below market value.

Businesswoman Phang Li Khoon, 46, also pleaded not guilty to abetting Guan Eng in purchasing the bungalow at a lower value. – The Sun
