But there are no ‘gods’ in the party.
DAP members continue to recognise the contributions of former national chairman Lim Guan Eng, as seen in his election to the party’s central leadership, said secretary-general Anthony Loke.
Speaking last night after the party’s internal elections, Loke emphasised that leadership involves taking on different roles at different times, rather than being forgotten.
“Guan Eng remains a central executive committee (CEC) member and still enjoys the delegates’ support. He was voted into the CEC, proving that party members appreciate his contributions,” he said in Mandarin.
He highlighted Lim’s long-standing service, including 18 years as DAP’s secretary-general, his tenure as national chairman, and his leadership in winning the Penang state election, where he served two terms as chief minister.
In response to a reporter’s question about whether the election results marked a new era for DAP, Loke dismissed any notion of political deification.
“I have never agreed with such terms. DAP consists of people, not ‘gods.’ Every leader has strengths and weaknesses. A strong party does not rely on just one person—no matter how capable they are. We need a team of strong leaders to move DAP forward,” he said.
With the CEC’s backing, Loke pledged to develop party leaders and create opportunities for new talent.
Lim secured 1,719 votes, ranking 26th out of 30 available spots, while Loke came in fifth with 2,508 votes. In the 2022 party elections, Lim had ranked eighth with 1,311 votes.
Following the CEC’s meeting last night, Lim was appointed DAP’s national adviser, while Loke was reappointed as secretary-general.
