DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has shot down a proposal by party veteran Lim Kit Siang for Muda to merge with DAP.

Loke said the party will instead focus on strengthening its own youth wing.

“That (suggestion) is Lim’s personal opinion. We have no such decision and such planning.

“Our focus is to strengthen our own party,” he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur tonight.

The press conference followed a DAP central executive committee meeting.

He said the CEC had instructed DAP Youth to step up its recruitment and to nurture young leaders in preparation for the next general election.

Lim – who said he admired Muda’s idealism – had suggested the merger on Sunday.

This was in light of the youth party losing deposits in all 19 seats it contested.

Meanwhile, Loke said DAP had yet to carry out a post-mortem on its own election performance on Saturday.

DAP had won 46 out of 47 seats it contested with its only loss being in Derga, Kedah.

One notable victory for Loke, however, was in Sungai Pelek, Selangor where DAP’s Lwi Kian Keong won with 51.8 percent of the vote.

Sungai Pelek, he said, had around 60 percent Malay voters.

“But we placed a local grassroots candidate who is Chinese, and we succeeded in defeating a Perikatan Nasional candidate from Bersatu.

“This shows that Selangor voters, including Malays, can accept Pakatan Harapan,” he said. – Malaysiakini
