Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has denied backing any particular individual as a candidate for prime minister.
The former prime minister said he was now with the new party he had formed, Pejuang Tanah Air (Pejuang), and is currently acting independently with no links to any party or individual who were vying for positions.
“I was informed that I am backing one of the candidates aspiring to be the Prime Minister, I would like to state that I have never supported anyone as a candidate to become the Prime Minister.
“I hope there are no more attempts stating that I am supporting a certain individual. No support, thank you,” he said via Facebook yesterday.
The short one-minute video was released hours after opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim announced he has the support of 120 MPs to form a new federal government.
“I would like to state that I have never given support to anyone to become the prime minister,” he said.
“I hope there will be no more attempt to paint me as being supportive of this person.”
Dr Mahathir, however, did not mention Anwar’s name in the recording.
