Her father, Devarajoo Maruthai and her elder sister D Gunavathi were present in court.

The accused had arrived in court at around 11am and appeared calm during the proceedings.

M Gunasegaran, 37, who is a security guard, was charged with murdering D Tharani, 35, who was an administrative executive at the place he was working, at the car park of the Giant Hypermarket in Kota Damansara at 1.50pm on Feb 5.

Clad in a white round neck t-shirt and a pair of jeans, Gunasegaran nodded to indicate that he understood the charge read to him before magistrate Nor Ariffin Hisham.

However, no plea was recorded after the charge was read out as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

The charge, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides the mandatory death sentence upon conviction.

The court fixed April 13 for mention.

The accused will remain at the Sungai Buloh Prison while awaiting trial.

Deputy public prosecutor Fazeedah Faik prosecuted, while Gunasegaran was unrepresented.

Lawyer M Manoharan held a watching brief for the victim’s family.
