The third child of former Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu was sentenced to eight months’ jail after being found guilty on a charge of drug abuse committed last year.

Magistrate Mohamad Aizat Abdul Rahim meted the sentence on Ahmad Saiful Islam Mohamad, 32, after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts in the prosecution case.

He was charged on June 13, last year, under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a maximum fine of RM5,000 or a maximum jail term of two years.

He was arrested in January after he tested positive for a THC drug (marijuana) at an entertainment centre at W Hotel along Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur.

In his decision, Aizat said the defence failed to raise a reasonable doubt in the prosecution’s case at the end of the defence case.

He said Saiful’s testimony was a bare denial and the testimonies of the defence witnesses were an afterthought.

A total of six prosecution witnesses and two defence witnesses, including the accused, were called to the stand to testify in the trial which started on Oct 15, last year.

Saiful, who was dressed in a black suit, stood calmly in the dock while the magistrate meted out the sentence.

The court ordered him to serve the jail sentence from today and also to undergo two-year surveillance under the National Anti-Drug Agency after completing the jail sentence.
