Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Mohamad Ariff Md Yusof in a statement today said the one-day sitting will only see the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah delivering the royal address when opening Parliament at 10am.

The decision was reached by Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on health concerns, Ariff said in a statement issued this afternoon, citing the ongoing government effort to contain Covid-19.

“Let it be known that I have received a notice signed by the prime minister who as head of Council had notified me that the government had decided that the Order of the First Proceeding of the Third Term, the 14th Parliament, will be amended,” the statement read.

The government has the power to amend the schedule under Parliamentary Standing Order 11(2) and 15(2), Ariff said.

With limiting the one-day sitting to the Royal Address, former prime minister’s Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s motion of no confidence against Muhyiddin Yassin will not see the light of day.

Not even government matters on financing for Covid-19 mitigation packages are on the agenda, unlike the notice for the Dewan Rakyat secretary that was first issued to MPs on April 17.

The change of agenda also means that the government will not be seeking Parliament’s approval for additional funds to combat the Covid-19 outbreak.

The government had rolled out a RM260 billion package to stimulate the economy.

Of this, RM20 billion was announced on February 27 by then-interim prime minister Dr Mahathir.
