Fined over insult on Hindu ritual.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has fined Maestra Broadcast Sdn Bhd, the operator of Era FM, RM250,000 for uploading offensive content related to a Hindu ritual on the station’s official TikTok account.

However, after reviewing the company’s appeal, MCMC has decided against suspending its broadcasting licence.

Reasons for the decision

In a statement, MCMC explained that the decision was based on several factors, including:

  • The arguments presented in Maestra Broadcast’s appeal.
  • The remedial actions taken by the company.
  • A formal apology from the parties involved.
  • The potential impact a suspension would have on Melody and Mix FM, which operate under the same licence.

The fine was issued under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (as amended on February 11, 2025) and was approved by the Attorney General’s Chambers.

MCMC’s warning on religious sensitivities

MCMC reaffirmed its commitment to tackling online content that could incite religious tension or threaten Malaysia’s multiracial harmony. The commission also reminded all broadcasters and online users to act responsibly in preserving racial and religious unity while complying with national laws.

This decision underscores the importance of responsible content management in Malaysia’s diverse society.
