Najib Razak should focus on his corruption trials and his defamation suit against Tommy Thomas, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said, after the former laughed at the nonagenarian’s claim that he never meddled in court matters when he was prime minister.
Najib had mocked Dr Mahathir’s recent comments in an interview with Free Malaysia Today, in which he denied interfering with the judiciary in 1988 when Umno was deregistered.
“Ha ha ha! Mahathir saying that the deregistration of Umno is proof he did not interfere in the judiciary is the biggest lie in the judiciary’s history,” Najib said earlier on Facebook.
In response, Dr Mahathir today said Najib “should focus on his case where he stole billions of ringgit from 1MDB”.
“He should also focus on his suit against Tommy Thomas who linked him with the murder of Altantuya,” Dr Mahathir wrote on Facebook, referring to Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu who was killed in Malaysia.
Dr Mahathir’s post was accompanied by a screenshot of Najib laughing at him.
In the interview with FMT, Dr Mahathir denied claims of judicial interference, saying the courts had ruled against him in several cases, most notably when Umno – which he led at the time – was declared illegal by the High Court on February 4, 1988.
The ruling came after 11 Umno members sued the party in 1987, seeking a declaration that the party elections earlier that year were unconstitutional and illegal. – TMI
