It appears the Perikatan Nasional government is deliberately making mistakes in its Covid-19 containment efforts to prolong the emergency and delay elections, said Najib Razak.
The former PM said it was why Umno had withdrawn support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin and suggested that an interim prime minister be appointed in his stead.
“PN’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic is getting worse with repeated mistakes and it is clear the mistakes are to prevent a general election,” Najib wrote on Facebook today.
“It seems that these mistakes are intentional.”
He said it was Umno’s wish that a temporary government be set up for three to six months to bring the health crisis under control and to return the mandate to the people.
“Umno is not power-hungry, unless returning power to the people is considered so,” he said, adding that the people had lost faith in PN due to its failure to handle the pandemic.
“This cannot continue. We cannot allow this situation to continue; it needs to be remedied as soon as possible. We can’t wait another year or two.”
Najib said Umno had from the start planned to work only temporarily with Bersatu after the Yang di-Pertuan Agong rejected a call for parliament to be dissolved following the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government.
“This is why we agreed to form a temporary government with Bersatu with the condition that an election will be held within six to 12 months.”
Yesterday Umno announced that it had withdrawn support for Muhyiddin effective immediately.
Party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the Umno Supreme Council came to a decision in a virtual meeting that went on for almost four hours.
However, Umno MPs, including those in Muhyiddin’s cabinet, have opposed the move, saying they remain behind the prime minister and his government. – TMI
