Umno leaders who keep mum or conspire against the Malay rulers and the parliamentary democratic system for the sake of their own benefit should be rejected, said Najib Razak.

The former prime minister said Umno leaders should speak out for the interest of the people and defend parliamentary democracy.

“It is mandatory for all Umno leaders and members to speak out when the Malay rulers command to safeguard the interest of the people who have been suffering for a long time or when the parliamentary democracy system has been threatened,” Najib said in a Facebook post today.

The Pekan MP said one of Umno’s main objectives when it was formed in 1946 was to oppose Malayan Union and defend the Malay rulers as well as freedom of the country.

Among two of the six objectives of Umno as enshrined in Clause 3 of the party’s constitution are to support and defend the constitutional monarchy and the parliamentary democratic system.

He reiterated that those who have planned to conspire against the Malay rulers’ commands are no longer interested in the party’s fight.

“Those (leaders) who are silent or have conspired with those who rebelled against the Malay rulers and the parliamentary system for the sake of their own position may no longer be interested in Umno’s struggle,” Najib said.

Last week, Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah after chairing a meeting of the Conference of Rulers decreed that Parliament must convene as soon as possible.

The king said convening the Parliament would allow lawmakers to debate the Emergency Ordinances and National Recovery Plan to exit the Covid-19 pandemic.

Najib said if the country was not in a critical state, the Agong would not have met political leaders, government agency heads and the Malay rulers, and later issue two very firm statements.

Najib said those who were no longer interested in Umno’s fight should not be nominated again in the next Umno elections.

“Even if (they are) nominated, these people will be rejected by the people who are suffering. And if they contest in the party elections, all Umno members must reject them,” he said. – TMI
