National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang has urged for the cancellation of any potential debates on religion, warning that such discussions could escalate tensions in Malaysia’s diverse society.

Referring to the planned debate between Tapah MP Datuk Seri M Saravanan, who is also MIC deputy president, and preacher Zamri Vinoth, Aaron emphasised that debates on religious differences could strain interfaith relations.

“Any discussions or debates regarding religious differences must not proceed, as they only highlight divisions and undermine efforts to strengthen unity,” he said in a statement on Monday (10 March).

Aaron stressed that religious discussions should be conducted respectfully, keeping in mind Malaysia’s diversity. He encouraged a focus on common values that foster national harmony rather than differences.

The minister highlighted the Harmoni Madani initiative, which promotes dialogue based on understanding, respect, and acceptance.

“It is better for all parties to use this platform, managed by the National Unity Ministry, as a medium to strengthen mutual understanding and appreciate diversity in our society,” he said.

He also urged elected representatives, politicians, religious leaders, and the public to play an active role in fostering unity and preserving national harmony.

This call for restraint follows public outrage over three radio hosts who were criticised for mimicking the sacred Hindu Kavadi dance while chanting ‘Vel Vel’. It also comes after Zamri Vinoth accepted Saravanan’s challenge to a debate on Hinduism.
