A group of NGOs has presented a memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong over the issue of certain Islamic preachers “insulting and denigrating” other faiths.

The memorandum was accepted by palace public relations officer Husni Yusop at Istana Negara today.

The NGOs, under the Global Human Rights Federation (GHRF), said seeking the King’s intervention was the last resort to uphold the “peaceful co-existence of Malaysia’s multi-racial, multi-religious and multicultural society”.

“We believe this is the only remaining option to put a stop to attacks and insults against the religions and beliefs of non-Muslims in the country,” GHRF president S Shashi Kumar said in a statement.

He said in delivering the memorandum to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, GHRF hoped the rights of non-Muslims would be protected.

Shashi added that Article 11 of the Federal Constitution, which relates to liberty and freedom of religion, must be upheld.

In February, the federation presented a memorandum to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob over the same issue.

It had previously lodged numerous police reports against certain Islamic preachers who have been “attacking non-Islamic faiths and beliefs” in the public domain and through social media by “mocking, misinterpreting and misquoting” the holy books of other religions. – FMT
