The Perlis Mentri Besar crisis is set to continue as the nine Barisan Nasional assemblymen are still refusing to endorse Datuk Seri Azlan Man as Mentri Besar.

However, the assemblymen said that they will apologise to Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Putra Jamalullail – but they would still not support Azlan as the Mentri Besar.

Padang Besar MP and state Barisan secretary Datuk Zahidi Zainul Abidin, who was the spokesman, said a letter has been sent to the palace seeking an audience with the Perlis Ruler.

“We want to apologise to Tuanku and explain to him why Azlan Man should not be the Mentri Besar,” said Zahidi at a press conference here on Friday (June 1).

However, he refused to reveal details on why they were against Azlan.

He, however, said he would not know when Tuanku would grant them an audience.

The crisis in the tiny state boiled over when the nine assemblymen aligned to state Perlis Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim boycotted Azlan’s swearing-in ceremony as Mentri Besar at the Arau palace on May 24.

Their action incensed the Raja of Perlis, who said he did not want Ismail Kassim, who is Shahidan’s brother, as the mentri besar because he would be a “puppet” in the hands of others.

However, Shahidan said Ismail had the support of the nine assemblymen and that Azlan should be sacked by Umno for accepting the post. – The Star
