Made it into the last eight.

National women’s doubles pair Pearly Tan and M Thinaah have made it to the quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics after winning 21-18, 21-9 over the Indonesian pairing of Apriyani Rahayu-Siti Fadia Ramadhanti in straight games.

They entered their last Group A match at Adidas Arena in Port de La Chapelle to make it into the last eight, overtaking two-time former world champions Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara of Japan.

Following the win, Tan and Thinaah finished second in the group behind China’s world number one pair Chen Qingchen-Jia Yifan.

The draw will be conducted after all the group matches are completed later today.

This comes a day after Malaysia’s mixed doubles pair Chen Tan Jie-Toh Ee Wei surprised their second-seeded Chinese rivals Liang Wei Keng-Wang Chang to top their group and reach the quarter-finals.

A total of nine out of Malaysia’s 13 Olympic medals in the past have come from badminton, with two more each in diving and cycling.

The first Malaysians to win Olympic medals were Razif Sidek and Jalani Sidek in the 1992 Summer Olympics, while Lee Chong Wei won three silver medals. – Malaysiakini
