Perak DAP will be contesting eight parliamentary and 19 state seats in the upcoming 15th General Election (GE15).
DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke admitted that it was not easy to choose candidates to represent Pakatan Harapan (PH) in Perak as it has many candidates of calibre.
“We (DAP) have so many well-deserved names to be shortlisted as candidates but we will only contest in eight parliaments and 19 state seats.
“But this is a tradition of the election…some will be selected and some not. It does not mean that those who are not selected are not good. They still play important roles in the party and for the future,” he said.
Loke said this when announcing the Perak DAP candidates who would be contesting in the GE15.
He added that out of 19 state seats, eight of them (42 percent) were young candidates aged below 40 and five of them are women.
During the announcement, Loke also said that Perak DAP is taking a bold decision by fielding a candidate in the Gerik parliamentary seat to defeat Barisan Nasional (BN).
“The top leadership has agreed to have an additional parliamentary seat which is in Gerik and we name Ahmad Tarmizi Mohd Jam to contest there,” he said.
Ahmad Tarmizi had previously contested in GE14 under Amanah ticket in the Parit parliamentary seat and lost to Pas and Barisan Nasional candidate Datuk Mohd Nizar Zakaria who obtained a majority of 6,320 votes.
The Gerik parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of its incumbent, Datuk Hasbullah Osman on Nov 16, 2020, due to a heart ailment.
Gerik parliament has 36,750 voters, comprising 33,675 ordinary voters, 2,111 military personnel and spouses, police personnel and spouses (959) and absentee voters overseas (five).
In the 14th general election, Umno’s Hasbullah secured a 5,528-vote majority to win the Gerik seat, defeating candidates from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) and Pas.
Ipoh Timur incumbent Wong Kah Woh will be contesting the Taiping seat, while Pasir Pinji assemblyman Howard Lee will be running for the Ipoh Timur seat.
Others who will be defending their parliamentary seats are Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming (Teluk Intan), Perak DAP adviser, Ngeh Koo Ham (Beruas), Perak DAP vice chairman M Kulasegaran (Ipoh Barat), and V Sivakumar (Batu Gajah).
For the new state seat, Loke said DAP will be contesting the Changkat Jong seat and the party will be fielding new face Badrul Hisham Badarudin.
Perak DAP chairman Nga Kor Ming will be defending his Teluk Intan parliamentary seat and will also be contesting in the Kepayang state seat.
