The Umno deputy state liaison chairman for Perlis has slammed party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for removing Shahidan Kassim as the state’s liaison chairman.
Zahidi Zainul Abidin branded the move to replace Shahidan with Menteri Besar Azlan Man as desperate and unreasonable.
“We reject Azlan’s appointment. Ahmad Zahid’s move to appoint Azlan will only spell doom for Umno in the state. We, Arau and Padang Besar Umno, clearly state our stance that we reject Azlan’s appointment.
“Why would you appoint a leader who suffered a big loss in the previous election? Kangar only won two out of five state seats apart from losing at the Parliament level,” said Zahidi, who is also Kangar Umno division chief, when contacted by Mingguan Malaysia.
Yesterday, Zahid in a statement announced the removal of Shahidan as the state liaison committee chairman without stating any reason.
The removal happened a day before Umno was to meet in a Supreme Council meeting to discuss the upcoming party election.
Shahidan, who is known to be pro-Perikatan Nasional, was appointed by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin as chairman of the people’s housing programme, PR1MA.
Zahidi, who is a cabinet member under the Muhyiddin administration, questioned why Azlan who suffered a major loss in the last election could become the state liaison chief.
Last night, Shahidan said he accepted the changes made by Zahid, saying it was the president’s prerogative.
“I have no problem with this. However, I have not been officially notified about my removal. I only learnt of it from media reports,” Shahidan told a press conference.
“I am trying to contact the party secretary-general (Ahmad Maslan) about my removal (as Perlis liaison chief). This is not a problem.
“It is within his (Zahid’s) right to replace anyone he wants to.” – TMI
