Police have detained a man believed to have snatched the handbag of a woman from her vehicle after an accident involving his car on the Federal Highway yesterday.

Shah Alam district police chief Baharudin Mat Taib said the suspect, aged 56, was arrested to facilitate investigations when he turned up to lodge an accident report at the district police headquarters in Shah Alam at 6.30pm yesterday.

“Investigations showed that the accident, footage of which went viral on social media, occurred at 1.33pm on Saturday involving three vehicles,” Baharudin said.

He said the woman, who was driving a luxury car, hit the suspect’s Proton Gen 2 from behind.

The impact of the collision caused the suspect’s car to hit another vehicle in front.

“No one was injured during the accident,” he said in a statement on Saturday night.

Baharudin said an investigation paper on the case had been opened under Sections 379 and 323 of the Penal Code.

A 90-second video showing a man opening a car door and taking a woman’s handbag has been making the rounds on social media since yesterday.

This apparently happened after she refused to show him her identity card.

He refused to return the handbag despite her pleas, asking her to follow him to the police station.

The woman also claimed that the man assaulted her.
