Sabah Minister Stephen Wong Dies of Heart Attack

Sabah DAP chairman and Sandakan MP Stephen Wong Tien Fatt died of a heart attack on Thursday morning, a party spokesperson has confirmed.

It is learnt that he passed away this morning at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

Wong, 65, who was also Sabah Health and People’s Wellbeing Minister, contested against Lim Ming Hoo from LDP in the 14th general election, garnering 19,094 votes against the latter’s 8,996.


It was reported that the two-term MP he had taken part in a hiking activity with a group at Tambaig Adventure Park in Kg Duvanson, Putatan, near Kota Kinabalu, earlier today.

According to former Putatan MP Marcus Mojigoh, Wong was his usual self, joking and even reminiscing about his younger days this morning, The Malaysian Insight reported.

“We were both the best of friends. He was even joking with around with me when he came over this morning.

“I was shocked to hear that he suddenly passed away,” Mojigoh was quoted as saying.

Wong had gone to Mojigoh’s house in Kg Duvanson, Putatan, to park his vehicle before going trekking at the Tambaig Adventure Hill Park early this morning.


Before starting on his trek, the two men sat together for a cup of coffee.

“I was not aware that he had a heart problem,” Mojigoh was quoted as saying.

“He looked okay when he returned to my house to pick up his car.

“He told me he was going to Kuala Lumpur (later).”

Mojigoh said he learned his friend had died hours later from family members.

Wong was born in October 1954. He was said to have undergone heart surgery several months back.

It was reported that he collapsed in his car after going on the hike and was immediately rushed to the hospital where doctors failed to revive him. He was pronounced dead at about 10.50am.
