Hong Kong actor Simon Yam will not be taking any action against the man who stabbed him with a fruit knife during a promotional event in the southern Chinese city of Zhongshan.

Sin Chew Daily quoted Yam’s manager Mani Fok as saying that the veteran had expressed hope that no further action was taken against the suspect.

“I told Simon he was a good man. But we actually do not want to take action. We just want to understand what happened. What made the man snap?” the daily quoted Fok as saying.

The suspect, a 53-year-old surnamed Chen, suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, said news outlets, citing a mental health assessment conducted after he was taken into police custody.

Fok also told the media that despite going through the harrowing experience, Yam did not suffer from nightmares.

“The organiser of the event will be sending their representatives to meet us soon,” added Fok.

Earlier today, Yam had through his Weibo account informed fans that he was well and thanked them for their concern.

He also tagged his wife Qi Qi in the message with a picture of a teddy bear and flowers. The soft toy was said to be a gift from their daughter Ella.

Fok also told the media that Yam had been transferred to the normal ward to continue with his recuperation.

“I think he will be discharged in two or three days’ time, so everybody can stop worrying,” said Fok, adding that the two operations on Yam were a success.

The first surgery was to treat Yam’s injuries to his abdomen while the second surgery was to treat injuries to four fingers on his right hand.

The wound on the abdomen is a 2cm-wide, 3cm-deep gash.

Fok noted that Yam was now being accompanied by Qi Qi and Ella at the hospital and was in high spirits.

Yam has cancelled all work appointments following the attack, said the state-run China Daily.

Meanwhile, Yam’s management company has told netizens not to believe a viral message allegedly sent by him requesting financial assistance, China Press reported.

The company said the message was a scam to take advantage of Yam being stabbed in Zhongshan.

The message stated that Yam did not have his wallet with him and sought help from fans to raise 100,000 yuan (RM59,716) for an operation.

The management company said Yam was being treated in the hospital with the help of the provincial government.

“We will take care of Yam and hope the public will not believe the message,” added the company.
