Tanah Rata assemblyperson Chiong Yoke Kong questioned if the culture of support letters will now become a new normal after Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal emerged victorious as the new Bersatu Youth chief.

Wan Fayhsal had promised to use his position as deputy minister and Bersatu Youth chief to issue support letters for projects that party grassroots may be interested in.

Chiong said Wan Fayhsal may well be the first youth chief to be elected after openly encouraging the culture of support letters.

The DAP Youth deputy chief said Wan Fayhsal had shown that the Perikatan Nasional government was unashamed at such practices.

“His success in the Bersatu national wing polls has set a new normal in politics whereby abusing public office for private gains is allowed and encouraged,” he said in a press statement.

Former minister Anthony Loke had previously said the MACC discouraged ministers from issuing support letter as it could lead to possible corruption.

Chiong said Wan Fayhsal’s success was a reflection of Bersatu.

He added that no PN leaders had reprimanded the youth leader for making such a promise.

In a meeting with Bersatu Youth grassroots, Wan Fayhsal was caught on video promising to use his position to influence the government in assisting party members.

“How (can I help?), I can issue support letters as a deputy minister, as the youth chief and I can make a copy to Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to strengthen (the support letters).

“That is using one’s position. Positions are given to help make things easier for you. It is not for me alone. But to help you, help me too.

“Firstly, vote for me,” he appeared to say in the video. – Malaysiakini
