An employee of The Star allegedly claimed he has connections in high places and solicited bribes to smother a corruption case.
M Youganesparan, an assistant manager at the editorial department of The Star was charged with receiving a bribe of RM20,000 at the Sessions Court today. The offence is said to have been committed at Dome Cafe, The Intermark, KL, at about 9:15 pm on May 30.
He allegedly received RM20,000 from former Felda Global Ventures Holdings Bhd (FGVH) chief executive Mohd Emir Mavani Abdullah, 54.
Youganesparan, 54, who allegedly claimed he has connections in high places and solicited bribes to smother a corruption case, was arrested at the hotel after he allegedly took part of the RM70,000 he had demanded.
The charge, under Section 16 (a)(B) of the MACC Act 2009, provides an imprisonment for up to 20 years and fine of not less than five times the amount of the bribe, or RM10,000, whichever is higher, if found guilty.
Youganesparan pleaded not guilty and was allowed bail of RM30,000 with one surety. He was also ordered to surrender his passport to the court.
The court set July 7 for mention.
