A tow-truck driver in a hurry to get to the scene of an accident to get the business ended up ramming into two teenage girls walking on the roadside, killing one of them.
The incident occurred along the Ranau-Telupid road some 120km from Kota Kinabalu, at about 3.30pm on Tuesday (April 17).
The accident cost a 16-year-old her life and resulted in a 15-year-old sustaining serious injuries.
The driver, identified as Mohd Faizan, 33, was seriously injured as well.
Ranau police chief Deputy Supt Farhan Lee said the students were walking home from their school at SMK Matupang, Ranau.
“The 16-year old, Nor Aliz Khairunnisya Azazahari, was killed almost immediately while her companion, Elcy Hairyson, 15, sustained a broken leg and injuries to her head.
“The driver of the tow truck was also injured and was sent to the hospital for medical attention,” said Farhan in a statement.
The case is being investigated under the Road Transport Act for reckless driving.
