No longer a laughing matter – Azizul of comedy programme Sukan Tak Sentral and the show’s producer could be looking at two years in jail.

Television presenter Azizul Ammar Abu Hassan was charged today at the Sibu magistrates’ court with insulting former national sprinter Watson Nyambek after allegedly mocking the former national sprinter’s father. He was charged under Section 504 of the Penal Code with intentional insult to provoke a breach of the peace.

The producer of Sukan Tak Sentral, Abdul Ghani Mohd Mokhtar, 41, was also charged with the same offence.

Both men pleaded not guilty and were released on a bail of RM3,500 each. They are to appear in court on Jul 4 for pre-trial.

The two are each liable for up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both if convicted.

In a segment of the Sukan Tak Sentral show aired on TV3 in April, Azizul imitated the bleating of a goat when pronouncing “Nyambek”, the name of Watson’s father.

Despite apologies from Azizul, Primeworks Studios and TV3, Watson lodged a police report over the incident.

The 30-year-old TV host and the production crew were suspended.
