The Umno leadership will draw up a list of candidates to serve as the interim prime minister, among whom are Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Hishammuddin Hussein.
Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the names would be submitted to the party Supreme Council for further deliberation.
“The Umno president has said he will not be a candidate as he wishes to focus on his court cases, and he will be proposing several names to the Supreme Council for a decision.
Asyraf, who is a member of the council, made the statement on Facebook this morning, following the party president Zahid’s announcement that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin no longer had Umno’s backing in parliament.
“Umno is not short of leaders such as Ismail Sabri and Hishammuddkn and others who have had experience leading under the Barisan Nasional administration,” Asyraf said.
Zahid, when announcing Umno’s decision last night, said a new prime minister should be appointed to see the country through the Covid-19 crisis. He said elections should be held once herd immunity is achieved via vaccination.
He did not name a candidate for the prime minister’s office.
He reiterated the Supreme Council’s stand that Umno would never support PKR president Anwar Ibrahim for prime minister or a government led by Pakatan Harapan-DAP.
Asyraf repeated the statement today.
Asyraf also said Muhyiddin had failed to consult Umno on the appointment of Ismail to deputy prime minister when the prime minister knew very well that the party leadership had decided to reject the number two post in February.
“As partners in the government coalition, even though it is Muhyiddin’s right as PM to make the appointment, he should have at least referred to Umno and let us nominate a candidate,” said Asyraf. – TMI
