Wee Ka Siong called Anwar Ibrahim’s announcement of having the majority tantamount to sabotaging the country, spooking investors at a time when the Malaysian economy is in need to help to recover from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The MCA president said the KLCI shed 10.5 points right after Anwar made his “big claim” of having the support to form the government.

The transport minister said the opposition leader’s action harks back to September 16, 2008 when he claimed 30 MPs were planning to cross over to the then Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

“Absolutely nothing but hot air came from that episode. Asked by the media during the press conference at noon today, he was still being evasive and vague when pressed on the numbers that he believes he has,” said Wee on Facebook.

Wee said MCA will continue to support Perikatan Nasional (PN) led by Muhyiddin Yassin, whose government has won “global praise” for its virus containment efforts while keeping the economy on an even keel.

“Anwar should be more responsible as a senior politician, especially with the Sabah state elections happening right now. The stability of the country is much more important than his obsession with being PM,” he wrote.

Anwar at noon declared that the PN government had fallen as he now had the majority in parliament.

However, he did not disclose how many MPs he had on his side when pressed by reporters at the press conference in Le Meridien Hotel in Kuala Lumpur.

The PKR president said he had spoken on the phone last night with Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah after the king was admitted to the National Heart Institute.

The Port Dickson MP said he would only reveal the number after he had informed the king.

Shortly after Anwar’s announcement, DAP and Amanah issued statements pledging their support for him.
