Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong says he has already provided a written explanation to Dewan Rakyat Speaker Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun following claims by Opposition MPs that the House has been misled over his statement on the cabotage policy.

The Transport Minister said he had sent the official letter of written explanation on Oct 12, with the Speaker’s Office confirming that it had received the letter on Oct 13.

Dr Wee also said that he was confident that Bagan MP Lim Guan Eng and Bukit Mertajam MP Steven Sim had both received the same letter from the Speaker.

“I will also comment further in detail on this matter in a debate session with YB Lim Guan Eng later, after the 2022 Budget is tabled on Oct 29.

“I’m waiting for YB Lim Guan Eng, when you’re free, let’s debate!” said Dr Wee in a Facebook post on Thursday (Oct 14).

It was reported by Malay Mail that Dr Wee had been given an order by Azhar in an Oct 11 letter to clarify his remarks on the cabotage policy following conflicting explanations given in Parliament recently.

In the letter, Azhar noted that Dr Wee’s explanation in Parliament on Sept 30 contradicted the written answers given by Communications and Multimedia Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa on the Apricot Subsea Cable System Project.

On Sept 30, Dr Wee had denied in the Dewan Rakyat that his decision to revoke the cabotage exemption policy caused the Apricot Subsea Cable System Project by Facebook and Google to bypass Malaysia.

However, on Oct 8, Sim received a written reply from Annuar, which said Dr Wee’s decision to revoke the cabotage exemption led to investors bypassing Malaysia. – The Star
