Pakatan Harapan (PH) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the government led by Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob as a weapon to kill Umno, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said today.

The Umno president said Ismail should look into the agreement because the opposition never liked the party in the first place.

“When they agree to sign the MoU, it means they have certain tricks.

“I believe they accepted us because they know that’s the way they can kill us. They never loved us! Read the constitution of each of the opposition parties.

“Be aware! You are sleeping with your enemies. They are holding daggers against us. Do we want to renew that MoU again?” said Zahid in his policy speech at the Umno assembly this morning.

Earlier, Zahid likened the MoU to the Greek legend involving Helen of Troy where “a woman destroys a nation from the inside”.

He reminded Umno delegates that the party must continue to move forward.

“Only weak leaders who refuse to let those who are brilliant and have the wisdom to develop the country.

“Weak leaders choose weak followers,” he said.

Ismail, who is Umno vice-president, signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Transformation and Political Stability with PH on September 13 last year, soon after assuming office, to ensure political stability.

Under the agreement, the government would undertake several political and institutional reforms in return for the opposition pact’s support to the PM.

The MoU also stated that the 15th general election could only be called after July this year.

Umno leaders have been calling on Ismail not to renew the agreement, and to call for the general election soon.

Last week, DAP organising secretary Loke Siew Fook called on Ismail to extend the MoU to postpone the general election until after the current parliamentary session ends on Dec 15.

Ismail said he would consider Loke’s suggestion.

Loke made the call to renew the MoU during a Dewan Rakyat sitting last Thursday, in which he told Ismail not to heed calls by Zahid for a general election.
