Two Biggest Parties Under-Represented in Cabinet

The two biggest parties on the government bench are under-represented in Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s cabinet.

Combined, PKR and DAP control 73.6 percent of the seats on the government bench, but were allocated only 50 percent of the cabinet positions.

Bersatu and Amanah were the most overrepresented in the cabinet and among the deputy ministers.

Bersatu has 13 MPs while Amanah has 11 MPs, out of which 12 and 10 respectively are either cabinet members or deputy ministers.

As for Warisan, five of the eight MPs are either cabinet members or deputy ministers.

The average age of the cabinet members is 55.74, with the median age being 57.

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is the oldest, at the age of 93, while Youth and Sports Minister Syed Saddique Syed Abdul Rahman is the youngest at 26.

East Malaysians make up seven out of the total number of cabinet members and deputy ministers, down from 17 in the previous cabinet.

In terms of women’s representation, they make up 21.43 percent of cabinet members. Only 16.53 percent of MPs are women.

Overall, PKR contributed the most female MPs (21.28 percent) followed by DAP (19.05 percent).
