KL SEA Games opens in an extravaganza of colour, lights and fireworks.
The National Stadium in Bukit Jalil was a stunning blaze of colour, lights and fireworks this evening as Kuala Lumpur welcomed 4,900 of the region’s best athletes after a lapse of 16 years.
The Malaysian contingent of 844 athletes marched proudly into the arena to loud cheers and applause with the trio of keirin world champion Azizulhasni Awang, world diving queen Cheong Jun Hoong and world silat champion Mohd Al-Jufferi Jamari bearing the Jalur Gemilang.
The almost 90,000-capacity stadium was packed with spectators who greeted the rest of the 10 participating countries during the parade of contingents with loud applause.
The ceremony broadcast live throughout the country and beyond kicked off at 6pm with the crowd entertained by a variety of performances such as school band displays and a show by the Malaysian Armed Forces.
Gracing the opening ceremony were foreign dignitaries, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Muhammad V.
Besides Kuala Lumpur, KL2017, which carries the theme ‘Rising Together’, will be held in Kedah, Selangor, Terengganu and Negri Sembilan.
The KL2017 official YouTube channel will host the live streams of the games.
