The Pakatan Harapan government may not be able to abolish the goods and services tax (GST) in its first 100 days as promised.
However, the five-member advisory council appointed by Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad will outline how the GST can be abolished in the first 100 days, according to council member Zeti Akhtar Aziz today.
“Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad has mentioned many times that we will follow the rules existing in our country and we are not going to deviate from any of the rule and the process when undertaking these kinds of changes,” she said.
The advisory council – dubbed the ‘Council of Elders’ – is currently looking into comprehensive ways of improving the people’s buying power and not just from a piecemeal perspective, she said after meeting 180 fund managers at Bank Negara today where she was the former governor.
While stressing that the abolishment of GST was final, she said the issue now was now how this was to be done, including zerorising the GST’s rate.
“We will make an announcement of what we want to do within this 100 days. [….] the people will know what is going to be done and how it is going to be done,” she added.
