The election reform group says it will update its list every Friday to ensure a clean election.
Bersih 2.0 has revealed the line-up for its ‘Hall of Shame on Election Offences’ for the May 9 polls.
It said the list was compiled from over 300 verified reports and include:
1. (5-Star Award of Shame) Hashim Abdullah, chairman of the Election of Commission (EC): For the hundreds of complaints received on problems with the electoral roll, including people being registered without their knowledge, voters being removed from the electoral roll and voters being transferred to distant constituencies. Hashim also announced arbitrary restrictions on free campaigning days before nomination, including limiting pictures and logos on campaign materials, it said.
2. P Kamalanathan (BN): For repeatedly treating voters with food, grocery and petrol.
3. Afif Bahardin (PKR): For using Penang state government programmes to give handouts such as hampers to voters in Seberang Jaya.
4. Abu Bakar Sidekh (Umno): For repeated treating of voters in Seberang Jaya, including giving out rice, hampers, tables, chairs and other essentials while campaigning.
5. Musa Aman (Umno): For giving out 155 motorcycles to entrepreneurs in Sandakan.
6. Shahanim Mohd Yusuf (Umno): For allegedly giving away money to voters at a BN event in Taman Keladi on April 23, then claiming it was from her allocation as a senator when Parliament was officially dissolved on April 7.
7. Noh Omar (Umno): For using the urban wellbeing, housing and local government ministry to hold campaign events in Gombak. He gave out donations to zakat recipients (April 19), ang pows to local residents (April 25) and used the ‘Program Transformasi Sosial DUN Gombak Setia’ to campaign against Gombak incumbent Mohamed Azmin Ali (April 19).
8. Jaspal Singh (MIC): For repeated treating of voters in Bukit Selambau, Kedah, where he gave out food and essentials in house-to-house visits.
9. Hamzah Zainudin (Umno): For repeatedly treating voters in Larut, including giving out free petrol and buckets, RM50,000 to 250 zakat recipients and RM3,000 to 200 people at a BizFair.
10. Kelantan Menteri Besar Ahmad Yakob (PAS): For repeatedly using Kelantan government machinery to hold PAS events, including giving religious leaders money in a hall covered with PAS flags and with the Kelantan state government logo on April 16 at the Pusat Tarbiyah Islamiyah Kelantan.
Bersih called on all political parties and candidates to campaign on their manifesto and the policies that they will implement should they come to power, rather than resorting to threats, bribery and dishing out goodies to get the support of voters.
In a statement, it said it would monitor even more closely the conduct of all stakeholders, especially the EC, political parties and candidates.
It said new ‘inductees’ to its ‘Hall of Shame’ would be announced every Friday up to May 9.
It also urged anyone witnessing an election offence to lodge a report online at aduan.pemantau.org or through WhatsApp (011-17721546). They can also call 03-79314444. – FMT
