The assets of Muhyiddin Yassin must be probed even though he is preparing to swear he never amassed public funds during his tenure as prime minister, Pakatan Harapan chairperson Anwar Ibrahim said.
Speaking to a 500-strong crowd at an event in Sungai Buloh yesterday, Anwar said swearing on this alone is not enough, as it also involves the issue of governance and integrity.
“He (Muhyiddin) said he dares to swear that he never took public funds, but this is a national issue, and it is about governance,” he said.
“Even if you swear, you still need to be probed on the assets in your possession.
“(He was) taking the easy way out, swearing on every little thing,” Anwar added.
The PKR president was referring to the whopping contracts worth RM500 billion awarded by the PN administration during the Covid-19 pandemic, without any open tender.
Earlier today, former Malacca chief minister Adly Zahari pledged that the Harapan coalition would probe the RM500 billion contracts awarded during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In his response, Muhyiddin said he dared to swear that all government expenditures for managing Covid-19 when he was the prime minister were made in accordance with procurement policies and regulations.
“I can swear that every sen of government money spent was for the rakyat and done according to existing financial regulations,” Muhyiddin was quoted as saying by Bernama.
Elaborating further, Anwar then pointed his gun at the outgoing health minister and BN candidate for Sungai Buloh, Khairy Jamaluddin.
Anwar said Khairy was also part of Muhyiddin’s cabinet and that the Health Ministry was also involved in these contracts.
Anwar, a former Umno deputy president, said he found that Umno could not be changed.
“Khairy said he wanted to clean Umno. Muhyiddin, as the former Umno deputy president… cannot be reformed,” he said.
“Only a good person can reform (a party),” he said.
Anwar also pointed out that Khairy has yet to provide an explanation on several controversies, namely the vaccine procurement and MySejahtera contract.
“You are also part and parcel of the corrupt and rotten system.
“When you said you want to clean Umno, please go ahead. But do not use the voters of Sungai Buloh for it,” he added. – Malaysiakini
