The Malaysian Volunteers Department (Rela) today lodged a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) against its own officer for withdrawing a police report against a ‘Datuk Seri’ charged with assaulting the officer.

Rela director (Operations) Mohamad Razib Buhaini, who lodged the report, wanted a probe to be conducted to ensure there was no corruption or breach of integrity involved in the action by Melvin Cheong Mun Khai in withdrawing the police report.

He claimed that Cheong, who has since been suspended from work, did not consult the department before withdrawing the police report.

“While the court proceedings were in progress, Melvin had decided to withdraw all of a sudden (the police report) without any consultation with Rela.

“We find this suspicious, and Rela feels that the MACC should look into the matter and investigate if there are elements of corruption,” said Mohamad Razib at a press conference.

“We seek the assistance of MACC to investigate the matter to protect the good name and image of the department,” he added.

Razib said that while it was Cheong’s personal right to withdraw the report, they suspected he had done so after receiving some form of “compensation”.

“We have our doubts, based on the previous discussions that we had. Let the authorities investigate it,” he said.

On Sept 7, the Ampang Magistrate’s Court granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal to businessman Liow Soon Hee, who is said to have a ‘Datuk Seri’ title, on two charges of assaulting and obstructing a Rela member from carrying out his duty last year.
