Now a witness in RM2.3bil Renong probe.

Businessperson Halim Saad has revealed that MACC had cleared him exactly one year ago over a probe into political figures from the 1990s, however, he remains a witness in the case.

The tycoon said he had received the letter on Dec 4 last year.

“This letter confirms that there is no evidence of any wrongdoing on my part in relation to the investigation.

“However, I continue to be involved in the investigation in the capacity of a witness,” he said in a statement today.

Halim did not specify what the probe was about.

Last year, Halim denied that MACC had summoned him over an alleged transaction of RM2.3 billion by United Engineers (M) Bhd (UEM) to purchase a 32.6 percent stake or 722.9 million shares in Renong Bhd.

Following that, the tycoon sued former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, former finance minister II Nor Mohamed Yakcop, and the government over the alleged deprivation of his rights as a controlling shareholder of troubled listed firm Renong in 2001.

The High Court struck out the suit in May this year, but Halim is appealing the decision. – Malaysiakini
