Bersih 2.0 has submitted its proposal on electoral and parliamentary reforms to the Institutional Reform Committee (IRC) for consideration.

The group’s acting chairman Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari handed over the proposal document to the Committee secretariat at Menara Ilham at about 10.30am on Wednesday.

“While work has already begun on the 1MDB issue, there is also an urgent need for electoral reforms to start immediately.

“The most important action to take immediately is to restore the independence and function of the Election Commission,” he told reporters outside the building.

“The EC chairman, deputy and five commissioners must resign immediately as they have lost public confidence and are complicit in electoral malpractice,” claimed Shahrul.

Among other things, the proposal calls for a tribunal to remove the seven EC members, and to immediately suspend them in the meantime.

The IRC, set up under the Council of Eminent Persons, comprises retired Court of Appeal judges Datuk KC Vohrah and Datuk Mah Weng Kwai, National Patriots Association president Datuk Mohamed Arshad Raji, constitutional law expert Prof Datuk Dr Shad Saleem Faruqi and National Human Rights Society (Hakam) president Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

On Monday (May 21), the Committee urged individuals and groups wishing to speak up about institutions that have failed to function according to the law to submit written representations.

The representations are to be submitted to the secretariat at Menara Ilham before May 28. –  The Star
