Rehabilitation centre in Malacca equipped with state-of-the-art technology launched.
The Pakatan Harapan administration added another feather to its cap with the opening of Malaysia’s first Neuro-Robotics Rehabilitation & Cybernics Centre at the Tun Razak Rehabilitation Centre (TRRC) in Malacca.
Launched by Human Resources Minister M Kula Segaran, the cybernic treatment is a revolutionary robot treatment system which offers new hope to anyone suffering from paralysis or weakening limbs, to regain the ability to walk again.
This could have been caused due to an injury or disorder to the central nervous system such as spinal cord injury, stroke, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and neurodegenerative diseases.
The centre is a collaboration between Socso and Cyberdyne Incorporated Japan and is equipped with state-of-the-art neurorobotic technology known as the HAL® (Hybrid Assistive Limb) Robot Suit.
It is currently the largest Cybernics treatment centre out of Japan, equipped with 24 units of HAL Robot Suits and is also the fourth centre to be established in the world (after Japan, Germany and the US) and the first in Asean.
According to Kula Segaran, it helps regenerate the patient’s own brain-neuro-physical functions through the signal interaction between the human and robot.
This, in turn, accelerates the learning process of signals from the brain that enables muscles to move the paralysed leg, resulting in dramatic changes in patient’s mobility functions.
The Cyberdyne HAL treatment supports early stage rehabilitation by providing intensive, task-oriented and repetitive training to the patients. This way, the treatment will facilitate faster and greater recovery.
“Since November 2018, a total of 100 patients or Socso insured persons have undergone Cyberdyne HAL rehabilitation treatment. Most of these patients suffered from spinal cord injury or stroke.
“The Cyberdyne HAL technology will provide a boost to Socso’s Return to Work Programme.
“Doctors are urged to advise their patients about the early intervention and rehabilitation programmes involving Cyberdyne HAL treatment at TRRC. This will assist Socso in enabling more workers to return to work earlier, which will not only benefit the workers and their families but also the country’s economy,” added Kula Segaran.
