26 men were arrested for violating the Movement Control Order (MCO) when they attended a funeral at Taman Intan, Kapar, yesterday.

Klang Utara district police chief ACP Nurulhuda Mohd Salleh in a media statement today said the police were dispatched to the location after they were alerted about the funeral which was attended by 50 people.

“The police repeatedly issued warnings for them to disperse, but a number of them continued to disobey.

“The police then arrested the 26 men at the location for violating the MCO.”

Nurulhuda said based on investigation, the funeral was for a teenager who died from a road accident.

“The teenager, who was 17, died at the Tengku Ampuan Rahimah Hospital on Wednesday from a road accident. However, no police report was made so far on the incident.

“The family held a religious ceremony at their house which was attended by the deceased’s friends.”

Nurulhuda said the deceased’s father was detained today under the Societies Act 1966 for organising a large gathering of people.

Those detained were between 20 and 30 years old.

Nurulhuda added the individuals were detained under Section 269 and Section 186 of the Penal Code, Section 43 of the Societies Act 1966 and Section 22(b) of the Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases Act 1988.

“All the suspects will be remanded for four days, from today to Apr 20, while the deceased’s father who is in his 40s will be remanded tomorrow.”

She also advised the public to adhere to the third phase of the MCO and said a funeral could only be attended by close family members.

Earlier, several video clips of police detaining the public and teenagers at the funeral went viral on social media. – NST
