The move by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad to form a new Malay-based political party will further weaken the community’s position and political power in the country.
Umno Secretary-General Datuk Ahmad Maslan was of the opinion that the former Prime Minister’s move would further shrink the Malay community’s political power.
He remarked that the Malays did not more political parties to represent them as Muafakat Nasional (MN), with UMNO and Pas, was enough to lift and fight for the community’s rights.
“Of course, Tun Mahathir has the right to form a party, but the Malay community does not need another political party. We have enough with MN.
“The Malays will be further weakened if they continue to be divided. The Malay community would lose out in politics and economy.
“I urge the Malays to continue backing MN in the interest of race, religion, country and people,” he said.
On Friday, Dr Mahathir who is the Langkawi Member of Parliament in a press conference announced that he will be forming a new “independent Malay” political party which is not aligned to Perikatan Nasional (PN) or MN.
The party, which is yet to be named, will be formed along with four other MPs who are currently independent after being removed from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
The 95-year-old former premier will be the chairman of the new party while his son, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, is expected to be its president. – NST
