The government has forfeited more than RM83 million worth of assets and cash seized in the misappropriation of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) funds.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said funds and interest amounting to approximately RM66.96 million, which were seized by the police, had been put into a special trust account under the Finance Ministry.
She said another RM16.06 million, which was seized by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), was put into the government’s revenue account.
She said 40 handbags of various brands estimated to be worth hundreds of thousands of ringgit, which were also seized in relation to 1MDB, were being auctioned off.
“The government, through the Attorney-General’s Chambers, has filed an assets forfeiture application under Section 56 of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla) against the assets resulting from the misappropriation of 1MDB funds,” she said in a written reply to Lim Lip Eng (Pakatan Harapan-Kepong) at the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday. – NST
