‘Darkest day’ of Covid-19: 126 deaths

Malaysia saw its most tragic day on record today, after 126 people succumbed to Covid-19.

The new fatalities raised the death toll to 2,993.

The previous high was 98 deaths, which was recorded on May 29. Today’s toll makes it the first time the daily figure crossed the 100 mark.

The Ministry of Health described today as the “darkest day” since the onset of the pandemic with the high number of deaths, active cases and patients in need of critical care.

The number of patients in intensive care units was at an all-time high with 878 cases, of whom 441 were on respiratory support.

The number of active cases also increased to 82,274 as 7,703 new cases were reported against 5,777 recoveries in the past 24 hours.

Selangor recorded the highest number of cases yet again with 2,728.

This was followed by Kuala Lumpur (701), Sarawak (588), Negeri Sembilan (586), Johor (554), Kelantan (541), Penang (407), Kedah (283), Sabah (254), Pahang (237), Perak (224), Terengganu (224), Melaka (209), Labuan (159), Perlis (7) and Putrajaya (1).
