New MACC chief says Kevin Morais’ death not linked to 1MDB, but Sarawak Report’s editor says she had enough people, who she could not quote, who confirmed it was Kevin Morais who provided her with sensitive 1MDB information.

The MACC has reiterated that slain deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais was not involved in the 1MDB investigations.

“As far as I know Morais had nothing to do with 1MDB,” new MACC chief Mohd Shukri Abdull said.

He said Morais had instead been working with MACC on a corruption case involving the supply of medicine to an army hospital.

Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown recently stated that she believed it was Morais who had leaked information on the 1MDB scandal that the Attorney-General’s Chambers was investigating.

Citing reliable sources, Rewcastle-Brown said she believed Morais had given her an alleged charge sheet against former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The London-based editor said that she had enough people, who she could not quote, who confirmed it was Kevin Morais.

In 2015, Morais’s brother, Charles, issued a statutory declaration alleging his brother was responsible for drafting the charge sheets against Najib and that he had then sent copies of the charge sheets to Sarawak Report.

The papers were reportedly sent the day after Najib removed then attorney-general Abdul Gani Patail and several members of his government in what has been seen as an attempt to pre-empt his purported arrest.

Charles told reporters then that he did not believe the official narrative explaining the kidnapping and strangling of his brother, which was said to be in relation to a separate bribery case and for which several men were now facing trial.

Morais’s body was discovered three years ago in a drum filled with concrete at Persiaran Subang Mewah, Subang Jaya.

He was reported missing on Sept 4, 2015, and was last seen leaving his condominium in Menara Duta, heading to Putrajaya in a Proton Perdana.
