Malaysian authorities are seeking the extradition of convicted financier Tim Leissner over his role in the 1MDB scandal, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The report states that Malaysia submitted an extradition request to the US Justice Department in August 2024. In November, Interpol issued a red notice for the former Goldman Sachs partner.
Leissner pleaded guilty in the United States in 2018 to conspiring to launder money and paying bribes. He admitted that he and his family received significant kickbacks.
“He is currently awaiting sentencing in the US, scheduled for May 29,” the WSJ reported.
Malaysian authorities are reportedly concerned that Leissner may flee to Germany, his country of birth, complicating the extradition process.
Investigations in Malaysia are ongoing, with assistance from Leissner’s former deputy, Roger Ng, who returned to Malaysia following his conviction in the US.
