Pejuang president Mukhriz Mahathir has confirmed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has initiated an investigation against his father and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

“I have sighted a notice signed by Azam Baki as the MACC chief commissioner to two of my brothers, Mirzan and Mokhzani, saying that an investigation has been started into Tun Mahathir Mohamad,” he said in a report by Malaya Daily.

“Both of my brothers have been ordered to declare their assets to assist the investigation.

“We feel that it is odd that in an investigation into a certain person, who may be suspected of abusing his power – we’re not sure because we’ve not been told in detail – those being investigated are his sons,” he said.

On March 23, Mahathir’s two eldest sons said MACC had ordered them to assist in an investigation into their father, revealing for the first time that a months-long investigation was targeting the 98-year-old former prime minister.

“My father is the primary suspect,” Mokhzani, 63, said in an interview with Bloomberg. “We are witnesses to whatever it is that they’re investigating.”

In January, MACC ordered Mokhzani and Mirzan, 65, to declare their assets dating back to 1981, the year Mahathir became the prime minister.

The orders are part of investigations into offshore business records revealed by a journalism consortium, MACC said at the time, without mentioning that the main target was Mahathir. – FMT
