The local government and development minister said if found guilty, the campsite operators faced a jail term of up to three years or a RM50,000 fine, or both.

He said the operators were permitted only to develop organic farms, not to set up campsites.

Following the landslide that claimed 19 lives, Nga said he had instructed the 155 local authorities in the country to clear all campsites near rivers with immediate effect.

Nineteen people have been found dead so far after a landslide at the Father’s Organic Farm campsite in Batang Kali, near Genting Highlands, at about 3am.

Search-and-rescue operations are continuing.
