A-40-year-old man, who failed to stop his car after fatally hitting a Telekom Malaysia worker, was arrested about 5km from the scene of the accident.

Omar Osman, also 40, died on the spot of severe head injuries while his brother Amran, 48, received 11 stitches for an injury near his right eye. They were with eight other workers fixing the underground cables when the incident happened at about 1.30am in Burma Road yesterday.

OCPD Asst Comm Anuar Omar said the driver was heading towards the city centre when he hit the two Telekom workers and fled.

“Policemen later managed to arrest the suspect who was found in his car in Jalan Perusahaan, Jelutong. He was believed to be drunk when caught.

“He has since been remanded by a magistrate’s court for reckless driving under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.

Amran, when met at the Penang Hospital mortuary, said they were almost finished with work when they were hit by the car.

“The high impact caused my brother to be flung into a manhole which was about 2.5 metres deep while I was only grazed.

“He was already dead by the time the ambulance arrived,” he said.

Another brother Salleh, 38, who was also at the mortuary, said Omar, the second youngest of seven siblings, lived with their parents, in their 80s, in Langgar, Kedah.

“He leaves behind a wife and four-year-old son.

“I cannot believe that he is dead as I only saw him last week,” he added. – The Star Online
