DAP firebrand Tony Pua confirmed that he will not be taking part in the 15th General Election.

  • His decision alone not to stand in GE15
  • Decision made many years ago
  • Reassigning to play a different role

Pua’s Damansara seat will now be contested by Gobind Singh Deo, who moves from the Puchong parliamentary seat.

Pua said it was his decision not to stand in GE15, one that he made many years ago.

He said many leaders tried to change his mind, but he would be sticking to his decision.

“I am not quitting the team and I believe in the team. I am just reassigning myself to play a different role that best utilises my strengths. When called upon, Tony Pua will give his everything,” he said at a fundraising dinner.

He thanked DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng for his support and for allowing new blood to stand so as to ensure DAP remained relevant.

DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook said Pua was “one of the most hardworking MPs in Malaysia”, but added that he had to respect his decision.

He also revealed that among the party leaders who tried to change Pua’s mind were himself and Lim.

Loke, however, hinted that “the moment we take over Putrajaya”, there would be some role for Pua. – NST
